Kasbah Tangier: Discover the Historic Palace, Medina and Coast Views

Kasbah Tangier: Discover the Historic Palace, Medina and Coast Views

Kasbah Tangier is the historic fortified quarter above the old medina, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. It takes around 15–25 minutes to walk uphill from Grand Socco. Allow 1–2 hours to explore its streets, palace museum and viewpoints. The area is free to walk around, but museum admission requires a ticket.

The Kasbah overlooks Tangier’s medina with its historic gates, narrow streets and ancient buildings that tell the story of the city. It's also a popular place to take photos and see the coast from a height.

But finding the entrances, understanding museum tickets and arranging parking can be confusing for first-time visitors.

Our local Tangier travel tips are practical walking routes, cultural highlights and easy advice for drivers exploring the city.

How do you get to the Kasbah in Tangier?

The best way to get to the Kasbah is on foot from the Old Medina or the Grand Socco in Tangier.

Walking from Grand Socco.

Start at Place du 9 Avril 1947, better known as the Grand Socco. Enter the medina and walk uphill toward Place de la Kasbah.

Depending on your route and walking speed this will take you between 15 and 25 minutes. Stairs, slopes and uneven paving should be expected.

The streets get narrower the closer you get to the historic quarter. It’s helpful to have comfortable walking shoes, especially in the warmer months.

By car

If you rent a car, find a legal parking space outside the narrow medina streets.

Grand Socco is a good place to start. You can also park near the port, but usually it's a longer, uphill walk.

Local’s tip: Mark Place de la Kasbah on your map before you enter the medina. Some narrow passages can be confusing to navigate.

What to see inside the Kasbah of Tangier?

Traditional courtyard and decorative tilework at Dar el Makhzen palace in Tangier. kasbah tangier

The historic quarter has traditional architecture, museums, quiet streets and good views over the northern Tangier.

The Makhzen House and Museum of Mediterranean Cultures

The former palace is home to the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures.

Its collections include archeological and ethnological objects reflecting Tangier’s links across the Mediterranean.

Inside, you will find decorative zellige tiles, carved plaster, painted woodwork and traditional courtyards. These details make the building an attraction in itself.

The palace's architecture is also worth your attention. Its decorated rooms and courtyard display examples of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship.

Historic streets and coastal views

Wander the old residential lanes beyond the museum around Place de la Kasbah.

Look out for historic doorways, whitewashed buildings and views over the Tangier waterfront and the Strait of Gibraltar.

The area is also known for its tranquil spots and traditional homes.

Plan to spend at least 30 minutes getting out of the main plaza. Some streets give interesting views of the old city.

Local tip: Visit the palace museum first, then wander the quieter streets around. This will help you understand the architecture you see outside.

History of Kasbah Palace?

The Kasbah grew to be the fortified center of Tangier, reflecting centuries of Moroccan and European influence.

From foreign domination to Moroccan governors

The site was occupied between 1471 and 1661 by an earlier house of the Portuguese governors.

Between 1662 and 1684 the English governors used a larger castle. Tangier was retaken by the Moroccans in 1684.

The present palace complex developed under Moroccan authority, with later rebuilding and restoration.

There is an inscription in the palace that reads Islamic year 1151 which is 1737–1738.

These various periods help account for the architectural character of the Kasbah and its significance in the history of Tangier.

The Palace as a Museum of Culture

Dar el Makhzen was eventually converted into a museum to preserve the city’s historical collections.

Today its exhibitions help explain Tangier’s long association with Mediterranean trade and cultural interchange.

Nearby, the contemporary art museum is located in the former Kasbah prison complex.

The historic quarter is more than a place for taking photographs because of these cultural attractions.

Local tip: Check out the different architectural influences in the palace courtyard. The decoration is a mixture of Moroccan craftsmanship and some European marble features.

When is the best time to go, and can you drive there?

The Kasbah’s outdoor streets are best walked in the morning or late afternoon. You can visit by car but only to a suitable parking point.

Museum entry and opening hours

The visitor information for the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, according to the National Museums Foundation, is as follows:

  • Opening hours 10am - 6pm

  • Tuesday: Closed.

  • Adults (18 years +) 30 MAD

  • Ages 12-18 MAD 15

  • Children under 12 years: 5 MAD.

Check the museum's current schedule and admission prices before you go, as these may have changed.

These are the prices to enter the museum, not a general fee to walk around the Kasbah neighborhood.

Parking and Your Day Plan

Allow 1–2 hours for the Kasbah, longer if you are interested in museums and photography.

Don’t expect to cruise through the pedestrian-only lanes. Instead, park near a road that is accessible and walk uphill.

Visitors with a rental car can combine the Kasbah with the Corniche, Cap Spartel or other sights outside the medina.

  • Driving to the medina: Park outside the pedestrian streets and walk the rest.

  • Arrival Tuesday: the Palace Museum is closed as usual. Try the outdoor neighborhood instead.

  • The historic quarter is bigger than the palace building. Kasbah mistaken for museum

  • Wearing the wrong shoes: Use comfortable shoes for steep, uneven streets.
